The Keck School of Medicine offers a broad range of accredited residency and fellowship programs. The Office of Graduate Medical Education provides oversight and support for the residency and internship programs sponsored by the Los Angeles County+University of Southern California Medical Center and directed by the faculty of the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.

Services of the Office of Graduate Medical Education

  • Acts as a mini-Human Resources Office. It distributes pertinent information to departments for prospective resident physicians such as resident training application forms and descriptive information regarding the Medical Center and its postgraduate training programs.
  • Distributes pertinent information to departments and residents concerning the hiring processes for acceptance of residents for training at the LAC+USC Medical Center with regards to American, Canadian, and International medical school graduates and foreign nationals.
  • Responsible for all National Resident Matching Program activities for departments that go through the NRMP matching process.
  • Assembles a hiring file that is kept in this office while the departmental offices house the residents training file.
  • Responsible for monitoring that all residents have the proper credentials to begin training and to promote and continue postgraduate training at the Medical Center.
  • Offers generic evaluation forms although individual departments have their own "Resident Physician Evaluation Forms" (for faculty to evaluate residents) and "Resident Evaluation of Teaching Faculty" (for residents to evaluate faculty). The "Resident Physician Evaluation Form" when submitted by the faculty becomes part of the individual resident's training file. The "Resident Evaluation of Teaching Faculty" is a confidential form giving the resident physician an opportunity to evaluate the teaching faculty.
  • Distributes to resident physicians upon request applications for the USMLE Step 3 examination, applications for California Medical Licensure, and applications for DEA numbers. Office staff is knowledgeable about these processes and is available for counseling.
  • Verifies postgraduate training for loan deferments and verifies completion of training for state licensure purposes. However, it is the individual department's responsibility to write letters of recommendation and verify training for purposes other than for loan deferments and state licensure.
  • Prepares alphabetical postgraduate rosters, a monthly Resident GY-1 assignment sheet, monthly resident service schedules, and weekly calendar of conferences offered for CME credit for distribution to appropriate physicians and departmental offices.
  • Serves as a resource concerning the resident application processes. The staff can answer questions pertaining to training policies and personnel policies. Staff can answer questions regarding licensure through the Medical Board of California; however, licensure authority lies with the Medical Board. The staff is available for counseling or will refer applicants to the proper offices for detailed information.
  • Records all training assignments for residents who train at this facility for Medicare reimbursement for training postgraduate physicians whether the postgraduate physicians are paid County employees or affiliates from another hospital rotating at the LAC+USC Medical Center.
  • Records and verifies Continuing Medical Education credits for Attending and Voluntary Staff physicians.
  • Prepares the yearly budget allocated for postgraduate training and monitors it throughout the fiscal year. Monthly billing of affiliate hospitals is processed through this office for resident services provided.
  • As a courtesy, a Notary Public is available to postgraduate physicians for notarization of USMLE applications and for California medical licensure documents only.
