Education & Training

The Department of Preventive Medicine trains undergraduate, medical, and graduate students in the areas of biostatistics, epidemiology, health behavior research, and public health.

The undergraduate and graduate programs offered by the Department of Preventive Medicine are noteworthy for the extensive opportunities offered to the students for involvement in faculty research. Student opportunities to take part in diverse research programs are bolstered by both the department training philosophy and its emphasis on interdisciplinary research and collaborations. Across the department, postdoctoral researchers are training to assume the positions as tomorrow’s leaders in preventive medicine.

Undergraduate programs

Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention »
Administered by the Division of Health Behavior, the B.S. in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Studies is an ideal major for students interested in pursuing careers in public health, health promotion, and disease prevention and for preparing students for advanced study in the health professions.

Bachelor of Science in Global Health »
The B.S. in Global Health combines a natural and biomedical science foundation with courses in the humanities and social sciences, bringing disciplines together to discover new approaches to understanding and improving the health of people worldwide.


Master programs

Master of Public Health »
Administered by the Division of Health Behavior, the department’s two-year M.P.H. program prepares graduates to work as front-line public health practitioners in disease prevention and health promotion efforts among diverse populations.

Master of Science in Global Medicine »
In conjunction with Educational Affairs, the department offers this unique program of study that emphasizes methods used to address the global burden of disease and the search for innovative new solutions to prevent global health crises. Graduates will serve as leaders in various domains within the allied health field, including medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and nursing. In addition, graduates will be prepared to collaborate and/or seek employment with a variety of international aid, non-profit, and global health organizations.

Master of Science in Biostatistics »
This program focuses on the theory of biostatistics, data analytic methods, experimental design (including the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials), statistical methods in human genetics, biomedical informatics and advanced statistical computing methods. Statistical methods are taught both from a practical and theoretical perspective.

Master of Science in Applied Biostatistics & Epidemiology »
This program focuses on applied biostatistics, epidemiological research methods, research applications including cancer, infectious disease, chronic disease, and environmental epidemiology. Epidemiological methods are taught from a practical, "hands-on" perspective.

Master of Science in Molecular Epidemiology »
In this program, students will understand and apply statistical methods for the design of biomedical research, understand epidemiological study designs, and be able to use and interpret results from specialized computer software for the management and statistical analysis of research data.  This program encourages applicants with undergraduate degrees in quantitative biological sciences or other related fields.


Doctoral Programs

Ph.D. in Health Behavior Research »
The specific objective of this program is to train exceptional researchers and scholars in the interdisciplinary field of health behavior research. The well-rounded training that students receive encompasses theory and methods from many allied fields including communications, psychology, preventive medicine, physiology, genetics, biostatistics, public health and epidemiology.

Ph.D. in Biostatistics »
This program is designed to prepare a biostatistician with in-depth statistical and analytic skills. The program requires a solid background in the methodological aspects of statistics, and in statistical thinking as applied to medicine, as well as, a solid grounding in epidemiological methods and in certain medical disciplines. This program encourages applicants who have undergraduate degrees in allied health, public health, biological sciences, or other related fields to apply.

Ph.D. in Statistical Genetics & Genetic Epidemiology »
The objective of this Ph.D. program is to prepare a statistical geneticist or genetic epidemiologist with in-depth statistical and analytic skills in biostatistics, computational methods and the molecular biosciences.

Ph.D. in Epidemiology »
The program requires a solid background in the methodological aspects of epidemiology, and in statistical thinking as applied to medicine, as well as, a solid grounding in epidemiological methods and in relevant medical disciplines.

Ph.D. in Molecular Epidemiology »
The objective of the Ph.D. program is to prepare a molecular epidemiologist with in-depth laboratory, statistical and analytic skills in both epidemiology and the molecular biosciences.

Keck School M.D./Ph.D. Program »
Preventive Medicine takes part in the Keck School’s joint M.D./Ph.D. program, offering Ph.D. training through their doctoral programs. The program is open to highly qualified students accepted into the M.D. program at the Keck School of Medicine and trains students for careers in academic medicine or advanced biomedical research.
