The Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California is home to a vibrant scientific community, with annual sponsored research funding to its faculty exceeding $312 million in fiscal year 2011. (Click here for the most recent news story on the research funding portfolio.)
Faculty-led research is conducted within twenty-three academic departments, four named research institutes (Broad, Norris, Saban, and Zilkha), two USC-owned hospitals (Keck Hospital of USC and USC Norris Cancer Hospital), three affiliated specialty hospitals (Children's Hospital Los Angeles and House Ear Institute) and the Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center. A large number of research division institutes and other research centers & programs consolidate the expertise of physicians, scientists, statisticians, epidemiologists, engineers and other research professionals from across the School and the University.
Following a naming gift from the W.M. Keck Foundation in 2000, the research enterprise entered an exciting growth phase with the goal to become a top-ranked biomedical research institution. Now as the school undergoes a second transformation with purchase of its hospitals and a new, larger gift to name the Keck Medical Center of USC, university and school leaders have renewed the commitment to development of the research enterprise.
