New initiatives of the Keck School and the USC hospitals are resulting in a concerted effort to integrate the two newly acquired hospitals into the campus fabric, and to plan for a successful development of a BioMedTech Park at the Health Sciences Campus. Construction is nearly complete on the Eli and Edythe Broad CIRM Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at USC and planning has begun on new clinical and research facilities.
The HSC Master Plan will support the goals and objectives as set forth in the Role and Mission of USC (adopted by university Trustees in 1993) and the USC 2004 Strategic Plan.
Biomedical Research Park
A key initiative of the new developments at the Health Sciences Campus is the plan to build a 110-acre biomedical research park. The research park will create more than 8,500 high-paying jobs in East Los Angeles, and draw upon the dynamic biomedical research taking place in Southern California. The park will help researchers from USC, UCLA and Caltech move their innovations from the laboratory to practical applications in the health-care industry.
CONSTRUCTION UPDATES
Research & Education Facilities
• The Eli and Edythe Broad CIRM Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at USC broke ground in September 2008 and is slated to open in Summer 2010. The $80 million-facility is a partnership between voter created California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) and the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation. Once completed, the five-story center will house basic and clinical researchers working collaboratively on stem cell research.
• The next project to begin will be the replacement of outdated research space for currently funded faculty.
• A fourth new research building dedicated to basic biomedical research is also planned for the future.
Patient Care Facilities
• USC University Hospital has recently completed an exciting modernization project in several patient care units at the hospital. The cosmetic upgrades in the 1991 Tower of the hospital spanned several months, beginning in January 2010. They were completed in early May 2010. The renovations included new furnishing in patient rooms and family waiting rooms, as well as new finishes on the walls, hand rails, flooring and ceilings. In addition, the nurse stations received a fresh look with new laminate surfaces, countertops and accent walls.
• The County of Los Angeles completed construction on a new nearly $1 billion, 1.5 million-square-foot hospital, located adjacent to the original LAC+USC Medical Center. The hospital opened to the public in November 2008.
