Community Outreach

Medical students present interactive workshops on a variety of health-related topics to teenagers at juvenile hall. Workshop topics have included: (1) Dating violence, (2) Drugs, alcohol and tobacco, (3) STD's and pregnancy, (4) Decision-making and (5) Contraception. The overall goal of the program is to help teenagers make positive choices.

LAC+USC Violence Intervention Program

Formerly known as the Center for the Vulnerable Child, the LAC+USC Violence Intervention Program (VIP) evaluates and treats all victims of violence. The program serves as a county-wide resource for cases of suspected child abuse and neglect and has expanded its services to include multidiscipinary interventions for cases of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Mobile Asthma Clinic/Breathmobile

The Breathmobile brings comprehensive preventive asthma care to high-risk inner city children at their schools, on a regular basis (every six weeks). A fully equipped 35' mobile clinic, staffed by asthma care specialists from the Keck School of Medicine, visits the schools. Each child receives a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan. There is an extensive outcomes research component tied to this project, which annually serves more than 60 schools and county clinics in East Los Angeles, South Central Los Angeles, Hollywood-Fairfax and the San Fernando Valley.

Eligibility:

Students attending one of the LAUSD target schools, including all of the USC Family of Five Schools.

Operation Smile

Operation Smile is one of the largest global volunteer humanitarian organizations that specializes in free reconstructive surgery for children. Physician teams correct cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities in countries from China to Colombia. Keck School Professor Randy Sherman, M.D., is founder and president of the L.A. Chapter of Operation Smile.

Sickle Cell Center

Supported by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center combines basic and clinical research, professional and community education, and direct medical services for adults and children. The Center provides consultation services and cooperates with a community non-profit organization that offers education and community services.

St. Barnabas Alzheimer’s Disease Center

The Center provides its clients with a diagnosis for Alzheimer's disease after ruling out all treatable forms of dementia with the same characteristic symptoms. Services may include: referrals for recommended medical, dental and psychiatric care; supportive companion and social work service; case management; and telephone reassurance. The Center also assists in obtaining transportation to necessary appointments.

Eligibility:

Serves anyone who is having memory problems.
