Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

About the Department

Altogether, the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department numbers 44 primary and joint-appointment faculty members, who conduct research in a variety of areas including: molecular biology and genetics of development and cell differentiation; membrane biochemistry and cell-cell recognition; kinetics and mechanism of enzyme action; protein structure-function interrelationships; carcinogenesis and cancer chemotherapy.

The department has a strong publication record in terms of published manuscripts per investigator and the impact of the publications. Several of our faculty published in high-impact journals. In recent years, the department faculty have received patents for methods they developed, including a cancer diagnostic method and a method for isolation of RNA from formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissue specimens. An additional patent was received for size-enhanced fibrinolytic enzymes: limitations of plasma.
