Overview
The USC ophthalmology residency program consists of a three-year post-graduate training program in ophthalmology as a resident in the Department, with six residents each year. A one-year position as Chief Resident (Resident Supervisor) following Fellowship training is available on a competitive basis. Individuals selected for residency training must complete one year of post-graduate training of either a categorical or flexible type of internship. This PG-1 year must be approved by the ACGME or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The ophthalmology training program is supervised by the full-time and attending staffs of the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, Department of Ophthalmology.
The program provides for maximum clinical responsibility in both the Out-Patient and In-Patient Departments. There is a large Out-Patient Clinic conducted by the resident staff under the supervision of the Professional Staff and the Resident Supervisor. Resident rounds on the In-Patient service and teaching conferences are conducted on a daily basis. The surgery program consists of both elective and emergency major surgery in which the resident performs increasingly difficult procedures according to his or her stage of development.
