Greetings from the Chair
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences integrates the best of science, medicine, education and psychology and behavioral health. The Department has expanded greatly in recent years in terms of the research mission, collaborating with local, national and international partners. It is an international research leader in genomic psychiatry, translational research, health services research and the neurosciences. The Department has expanded the breadth and depth of the education programming, with internationally known leaders in curriculum, evaluation, research and teaching methodology. Our clinical educators are committed to the best possible educational experience for our students, residents, fellows and other trainees - and dedicated to their development as clinicians, teachers, researchers and leaders. Clinical services are a fundamental part of the academic and training missions – in collaboration with Keck Medical Center and Clinics, the Norris Cancer Institute, LAC+USC Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, the Sepulveda Veteran’s Affairs Hospital and many other community partners. USC plays a leading role in health care delivery, in developing and teaching today's best health care practices, and serving the diverse and often underserved patients and communities in the greater Los Angeles area. Our trainees learn, and contribute to, the development of clinical, professional, decision-making, critical thinking and lifelong skills for practice and learning.

- To educate today’s and tomorrow's psychiatrists, other physicians, allied mental health providers and scientists, including helping them to develop self-evaluation and quality improvement skills for a lifetime of practice and investigation, and
- To provide service by promoting appreciation of culture and diversity of our community, trainees, department and school, while developing leaders, and engaging one another in questions that lead to change.
Vision for the Future
Our vision is a well-integrated approach to psychiatry and behavioral health using our research, educational, clinical and technological strengths to leverage ideas and resources. Interdisciplinary and inter-professional team work and shared mental models promote excellence in patient care, learning and healthcare administration. Partnership of the Department and School with a network of community agencies, healthcare leaders and regional academic institutions helps us leverage science, innovation, and leadership – and to develop new ways to practice. Our workforce engages in the “best questions” for achieving targeted outcomes and learns a process for quality and self-improvement for the practice of psychiatry for this decade and over a lifetime.
