Education & Training
The USC Health Sciences Campus (HSC) provides an exciting
place to pursue medical education. The campus, in the heart of Los Angeles,
provides a concentrated clinical, research, and classroom environment for
medical education at all levels. The core of the campus is the “quad” bounded
by Norris Medical Library, the Keith Administration building which houses USC Keck
School of Medicine’s administrative offices as well as state of the art lecture
facilities, several laboratory facilities, the pharmacy school and Kenneth Norris
Comprehensive Cancer Center. North of the quad are USC University Hospital and
its associated outpatient clinic buildings as well as two major new research
facilities housing the Zilkha Neurogenetics Institute and the Broad Center for
Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research. South of the quad is the Los
Angeles County + USC Medical Center. This safety net medical center is one of
the busiest hospitals in the United States, providing care to the poor and
underserved, as well as serving as a Level I Trauma center to all who need it.
As a result of the multiple health care facilities located in
a concentrated area, USC provides health care to a very diverse population,
both in terms of disease processes as well as cultural background. Closely tied
to the clinical effort, USC Keck School of Medicine’s research effort is
growing exponentially in areas core to national health research priorities.
Medical education and training thrive in this environment.
More reasons to be excited about medical education and
training at USC are:
• The University of Southern California recently
bought USC University Hospital, its flagship facility, and is pursuing an
exciting outreach campaign promoting the Doctors of USC.
• USC University Hospital has opened a large new
wing with increased patient care options.
• The Dean of the Medical School, Carmen
Puliafito, MD is pursuing an exciting agenda of innovation with respect to
education and research and a strong recruitment effort for lead clinical and
research faculty.
• LAC+USC Medical Center is a brand new
state-of-the-art hospital, having opened in November 2008. It is comprised of
three connected wings: the In-patient tower, the outpatient tower and the Diagnosis
& Treatment tower housing the operating rooms, radiology departments,
clinical laboratories, and invasive procedure suites.
• USC Keck School of Medicine just passed its most
recent LCME review with flying colors.
Radiology Education
& Training
Set in the background of this thriving medical campus, USC
Radiology education is superb at all levels. The department has clinical
facilities at LAC+USC Medical Center, USC University Hospital, Norris
Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as an on-campus outpatient imaging
facility, a PET center, and a small animal imaging center for use in the
research efforts of many departments. The Department of Radiology, chaired by
Edward Grant, M.D., is comprised of almost 70 faculty members including
physicians (tenure track, clinical track and clinical educator track), and
non-physician scientists in physics, molecular imaging and radiochemistry. The
department supports two medical school elective clerkships, one in general
radiology and the other in neuroradiology. In addition, our department can
support individually tailored subspecialty elective clerkships. Approximately
80 – 100 medical students per year participate in the departmental clerkship
prpogram. Visiting clerkships are possible through Keck School of Medicine. The
radiology residency, a 4-year advanced program is comprised of 40-44 residents.
The residency,
approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education on a five
year review cycle, is described in detail here.
The department also
supports eighteen fellowship positions. Fellowships offered include
ACGME-approved one-year programs in Interventional Radiology and
Neuroradiology. Other fellowships include Nuclear Medicine, PET,
Musculoskeletal Radiology, Advanced Body Imaging and Women’s Imaging. Clinical
education takes place at all departmental facilities. Research activity is
supported and encouraged for residents and fellows. Faculty guidance is strong
and growing in scope.
