Master of Science in Global Medicine

MS in Global Medicine Management Track

The MSGM program’s core curriculum currently includes coursework in basic medical concepts and treatment, diseases and their risk factors, maternal and child health, and cultural competence. The program provides a comprehensive overview of global health issues and is particularly useful to those who seek to develop their knowledge of global health in a clinical context. Many graduates intend on attending medical school and practicing medicine in developing countries, where their specialized expertise in global health developed through the MSGM program will serve them well.

Yet clinical knowledge alone cannot address the increasingly daunting international health challenges of today. Such challenges are almost incomprehensible in their magnitude and severity. The global health community is in dire need of healthcare professionals who have, in addition to clinical expertise, the necessary leadership and management skills to conceptualize, plan, and implement effective responses to such sizeable challenges.

Now more than ever, global health professionals must possess a breadth of knowledge and balance a wide range of roles and competencies. In addition to having a sophisticated understanding of the clinical realities of global medicine, they must have a systematic, business-focused approach to the planning and execution of international health care facilities, organizations, and projects. They must intimately understand the larger political, economic, and social systems within healthcare systems as well as the national and international market forces and how they contribute to health gains or declines. They must be resourceful and resilient, willing and trained to strategize and take charge in uncharted territory, and thrive and lead without traditional infrastructural support. They must be capable of identifying challenges, forging pathways, and finding solutions.

With these needs in mind, a new vision for global health education emerges: one that demands thorough and integrated knowledge of medical concepts, cultural competence, and business-based health management and leadership. The MSGM program will be prepared has realized this vision by expanding its course offerings to incorporate courses on finance, management, leadership, and marketing and offering the MS in Global Medicine Management track.
