Dr. Li is a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the USC Keck School of Medicine. He received his bachelor’s degree from Wuhan University in China and his Ph.D. from Wayne State University. He performed his post-doctoral training with Nobel laureate Dr. Paul Modrich (Chemistry, 2015) at Duke University. Before joining the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center in 2015, Dr. Li held professorship and the Madeline James and Edith Gardner Distinguished Chair in Cancer Research at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Dr. Li is known for his seminal work in DNA mismatch repair (MMR). His major contributions to the field include discovering MMR defects in human cancer displaying microsatellite instability, identifying and characterizing key protein components required for MMR, reconstituting the human MMR reaction in vitro, and discovering the apoptotic function of MMR and regulation of human MMR by histone marks and posttranslational modifications. Dr. Li also studies the role of MMR in promoting (CAG)•(CTG) trinucleotide repeat expansion that causes many neurodegenerative disorders.
