Anne T. Vo, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Clinical Medical Education at the Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California. As an evaluation scholar-practitioner, Dr. Vo’s substantive interests lie at the intersection of comparative evaluation theory, evaluation capacity building, and organizational development. Her work contributes to the field's understanding of how evaluation can be practiced better; where and how social science theory and evaluation science dovetail into each other; and how this knowledge can be leveraged to drive change. Evidence of these themes can be found in Vo’s evaluation practice. Her portfolio of program evaluations consists of work with academic support programs for students from disadvantaged communities; social interventions that are designed to address the pressing needs of current and former foster youth; leadership training programs for international educators working in politically challenging environments; and social enterprises that have been tasked by angel investors to achieve global social impact.
Vo established the Keck Evaluation, Institutional Reporting, and Assessment (KEIRA) Office shortly after her arrival at USC. As an institution-funded evaluation unit, KEIRA’s aim is to support the transformation of medical training through research, service, and education. Dr. Vo provides vision and strategic direction as KEIRA’s Associate Director. Prior to joining the USC faculty, she served as the Associate Director of the University of California Evaluation Center. The UCEC was a multi-year, multi-campus initiative funded by the UC Office of the President. It was designed to drive data use and decision-making in education by growing the knowledge base of effective policies and practices at the local, state, and federal levels.
As an educator, Dr. Vo has had the pleasure of working with diverse learners, not limited to traditional and non-traditional students, medical students, fellow educators, program administrators across many disciplines, and clinicians. She has taught graduate-level courses on research methodology and design as well as seminars on evaluation use, theory, and procedures.
Dr. Vo currently holds leadership positions with the Research on Evaluation Divisions of the American Educational Research Association and American Evaluation Association. She co-authored a textbook, Evaluation Essentials: From A to Z (with M.A. Alkin); co-edited a book titled, Evaluation Use and Decision Making in Society (with C. A. Christie); and has published book chapters and peer-reviewed articles in journals such as the American Journal of Evaluation, Evaluation and Program Planning, and New Directions for Evaluation. She also serves as Editor of the American Journal of Evaluation’s section on Teaching and Learning Evaluation and Director of the Southern California Evaluation Association.
