Overview

David M. Shavelle, MD, is an Interventional Cardiologist with board certification in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Interventional Cardiology. He received his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine, and completed an internship and residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Torrance, CA. He then completed General Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Washington, Seattle, and an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Good Samaritan Hospital, Los Angeles. Before joining USC in 2009, Dr. Shavelle was Director of Interventional Cardiology and Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

An active researcher, Dr. Shavelle has participated in more than 60 clinical studies of new medical devices and drugs. He has authored more than 150 articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed medical journals and more than 15 book chapters. In addition, he has been invited to speak at more than 75 local, regional, and national medical meetings. Recent publications include “Predictors of reperfusion delay in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction self-transported to the hospital (from the American Heart Association's Mission: Lifeline Program)” in the March 1, 2014 issue of American Journal of Cardiology 2014; “Almanac 2015: coronary artery disease” that was published in the January, 2016 issue of Heart; and “Evolution from electrophysiologic to hemodynamic monitoring: the story of left atrial and pulmonary artery pressure monitors” that was published in the October 2015 edition of Frontiers in Physiology. He is currently Deputy Editor for the British Journal Heart and one of four Consulting Editors for Cardiology Clinics.

Dr. Shavelle has received several awards, including two teaching awards from USC Keck School of Medicine and a Passionate Performance Award from Los Angeles County + USC Healthcare Network. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Keck Medical School of USC, Director of the LAC+USC Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Director of the General Cardiovascular Fellowship Training Program at USC. He is also Director of the STEMI program at LAC+USC Medical Center and Director of a Peer-to-Peer training program for physicians implanting the CardioMEMS heart failure device.
