Overview

Dr. Yassine is an Assistant Professor of Medicine-Endocrinology at the University of Southern California and was mentored by Dr. Serrine Lau. Dr. Yassine graduated from Beirut Arab University in June 2003 with his MD. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, and graduated in June 2007. Dr. Yassine was awarded the prestigious “Resident Teacher of the Year” at graduation. Dr. Yassine was awarded the “Presidential Poster Award” (2009) from the Endocrine Society for research on platelet function in diabetes. Dr. Yassine was co-mentored by additional SWEHSC members including Drs. Craig Stump (Endocrinology, clinical expertise), Dean Billheimer (Biostatistics, proteomics and population analysis) and Donata Vercelli (Advisor, clinical and genetics expertise).

Dr. Yassine's long term research program focuses on the contribution of dyslipidemia to atherosclerosis. He completed his post-doctoral training in the Lau Lab (2010) in the application of mass spectrometry to study proteins and protein modifications relevant to diabetes and cardiovascular disease. He joined the faculty at the University of Arizona and established the lipid clinic. With this exposure, he developed an understanding of the unmet clinical needs in lipids and cardiovascular disease. To that end, he obtained a career development award from NIH K23 grant HL107389, entitled "Effect of Saturated Fat on HDL Proteome, " with Dr. Serrine Lau as his main mentor. and an AHA clinical research award to study HDL protein composition by mass spectrometry in diabetes.

In 2009 Dr. Yassine served as a key personnel on a SWEHSC Pilot project grant (PI-Stump) to study the role of arsenic exposure on diabetes development and complications. Dr. Yassine was mentored by Drs. Lau and Tsaprailis on the utilization of mass spectrometry-based proteomics approaches in determining protein biomarkers associated with Type 2 Diabetes and the association of arsenic exposure and diabetes development. In addition to providing mentors from all disciplines, secretarial, and computer support, the SWEHSC was a platform for promoting interactions with Drs. Randy Nelson and Peter Reaven, established investigators in diabetes projects at the Biodesign Institute of ASU, and the Phoenix VA Medical Center, respectively. These interactions resulted in Dr. Yassine serving as a co-Investigator on a NIH R01 application titled “Population Proteomics of Type 2 Diabetes” led by Dr. Nelson. He moved to the University of Southern California in September 2012 to establish his own laboratory.
