I am interested in neuroscience and immunology, especially in the interplay between immune cells and the nervous system in neurosurgical disorders such as glioma. My research career began after college when I studied the mechanisms of action of novel therapeutics for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) under the direction of John C. Byrd, MD, at Ohio State University. I then earned my medical degree from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), where I also completed cognitive neuroscience research in the laboratory of Martin P. Paulus, MD, now director of the Laureate Institute for Brain Research. My clinical experiences at UCSD exposed me to neurosurgical practice, which attracted my interest on scientific, practical, and human levels. I greatly enjoy being in the operating room and helping people with neurosurgical problems. For many neurosurgical diseases, there is no cure, and for this reason I feel a strong pull to lend my knowledge and efforts towards research in this area. Currently, I work in the lab of Omid Akbari, PhD, on regulatory T cells and innate lymphoid cells, furthering our understanding of these important immune players and enhancing my own research tool set as preparation for future projects in the immunology of neurosurgical diseases, and independent work in this field.
