Peter F Crookes MD is Professor of Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. He is a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, and obtained his medical degree and surgical training there, and then traveled to Melbourne, Australia, and subsequently to Los Angeles, California, where he was recruited to USC in 1990. He is an upper GI and Bariatric surgeon and was for several years the director of the bariatric program. In addition, he has a special interest in medical and surgical education and is the recipient of numerous awards from the department and the Keck School of Medicine for his contributions in that area. He is the director of the Student Clerkship for the Keck School of Medicine. His research interests include a wide variety of problems related to morbid obesity and the effect of bariatric surgical procedures on numerous disease processes, as well as studies in the pathophysiology of diseases of the esophagus and stomach. He has published extensively on the metabolic changes associated with different types of bariatric surgery, as well as the physiology of GERD and achalasia. He teaches medical ethics to medical students and surgical residents. He also has a lively interest in medical and surgical history and lectures and writes on historical topics of relevance to medicine and surgery.
