Mission Statement

We are dedicated to serving our patients, towards educating the physicians of tomorrow, and striving to become the best physicians we can be.

About the Division

The General Internal Medicine faculty takes care of greater than 100 outpatients per day at our “Healthcare Consultation 2” location as well as in our satellite locations around the city. The Division has built several strong programs that benefit our patients. The division offers clinical programs that include Adult Medicine (Men’s, Women’s and Senior Health), Perioperative Medicine, Pediatrics, Allergy and Asthma and Same Day Services.

The role of the Hospital Medicine section includes delivery of excellent patient care, while focusing on important quality measures and hospital metrics. The hospital medicine team provides 24/7 in-house presence, as well as our Evaluation & Treatment Clinic (ETC) and leading our rapid response unit.

Our Geriatric Fellowship Program has expanded to include a Geriatric Assessment Clinic, Adult Protective Team consultations as well as new affiliations with the Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and Hollenbeck Home. The latter is the oldest life care facility in California located only one mile from the Health Sciences Campus. It is anticipated that these new affiliations will develop into outstanding venues for training fellows.

Our Palliative Care physicians have developed a strong program both at our Los Angeles General Medical Center and at the Keck Medical Center. They have folded this vital program into services rendered there as well as lead the charge towards better medical student and resident education in the areas of symptom management, healthcare planning, and end-of-life care to name a few.

In the research arena our faculty members continue to explore modes of prevention and detection of elder abuse, reduction of medical complications, such as polypharmacy and errors in the long-term environment, and the economic consequences of our ever increasing national healthcare budget.

Our training programs benefit from our outstanding group of clinician educators. The faculty members of GHPGIM account for 95% of the inpatient general medicine teaching and supervision in Los Angeles General Medical Center. In the ambulatory environment our faculty supervise approximately one third of the clinics at the LAC+USC Healthcare Network.

Our faculty have dedicated their careers to providing state-of-the-art care to their own patients while developing the hundreds of doctors-in-training each year at the Keck School of Medicine into sophisticated, humane and compassionate physicians, the future practicing physicians in the region, California and the nation. They devote their attention to our community’s health needs, at Los Angeles General Medical Center as well as the private practice arena at the USC Health Sciences Campus and multiple satellite sites.

Gehr Family Center for Implementation Science

The Center is funded by a generous gift from Norbert Gehr, who wished to leave a legacy to promote academic efforts that enhance the delivery of healthcare. In the Center’s charge to study innovative approaches to healthcare delivery, it will also have an immediate impact on the scholarly pursuits of the Division’s faculty. In 2016, the Gehr Center welcomed its inaugural faculty members: Drs. Michael Hochman, Welmoed Van Deen, Rushabh Modi and Sonali Saluja. Rachel Lim was hired as the Center’s coordinator. Thus far, the Gehr Center faculty has organized a summer innovators program for health professional students; awarded faculty innovation grants; kicked off its quarterly speakers series featuring national experts in healthcare delivery; established an internship program in partnership with the innovative Medicare Advantage group CareMore; developed a blog series titled: “Disruptions or Distractions: A Critical Look at Healthcare Delivery Reform;” published several scholarly articles; and received grant funding from the UniHealth Foundation, the California Healthcare Foundation, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Training & Education

Each year the Keck School of Medicine matriculates approximately 180 medical students. In addition, the Department of Medicine graduates 60 board eligible specialists in Internal Medicine and approximately 30 board eligible sub-specialists in the various disciplines within Internal Medicine (e.g., Cardiology, Endocrinology, Geriatrics). Geriatric, Hospital, Palliative Care and General Internal Medicine (GHPGIM) faculty are instrumental in all of these graduates’ education and maturation into excellent physicians.
