About Dr. Shaul Massry

Shaul G. Massry, M.D. is Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Physiology & Biophysics at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California and served as Chief of its Division of Nephrology from 1974 to 2000.

Dr. Massry has received honorary doctorates from fourteen universities across Europe, including the oldest and prestigious Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic), The University of Bologna (Italy), and the University of Padua (Italy). He is an honorary member of many international professional societies including the Italian, Polish, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Czechoslovakian, Indian, and Israel Societies of Nephrology. He is also an honorary member of the Belgian, Polish, Russian and Bulgarian Academies of Science, as well as the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, Thailand and London.

In addition to the National Kidney Foundation’s David Hume Memorial Award and the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award from the American Heart Association – Greater Los Angeles Affiliate, Dr. Massry has been the recipient of numerous other awards from universities and societies throughout the world, including the first Leo Ambard Gold Medal from the University of Strasbourg (France), the Andre Lichtwitz Award from INSERM (National Institute for Scientific Medical Research of the French Government), the Domenico Cotugno Gold Medal from the University of Bari (Italy), the Paolo Mascagni Prize and Gold Medal from the University of Siena (Italy), the Rinecker Gold Medal from the University of Wurzburg (Germany), the Karol Marcinkowski Medal from the Medical Academy of Poznan (Poland), the Malpighi Gold Medal from the University of Messina (Sicily), and the Medal of Honor from the University of Adana School of Medicine (Turkey).

Dr. Massry was the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Nephrology, and of Mineral and Electrolyte Metabolism, a member of the editorial boards of many medical journals, and a reviewer for many other journals. He is the co-Editor of the Textbook of Nephrology.

Dr. Massry is a past President of the National Kidney Foundation, American Society of Renal Biochemistry and Metabolism, International Society of Nutrition and Metabolism in Renal Diseases, International Society of Uremia Research and Toxicity, and International Association of the History of Nephrology. He is a past Chairman of the National Kidney Foundation’s National Medical Advisory Board, and has served in many other organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, International Society of Nephrology, and American Heart Association – Greater Los Angeles Affiliate.

Dr. Massry has been a frequent guest speaker at national and international meetings and a visiting professor at many universities across the globe. He has published over 600 scientific papers, 111 chapters in books and edited 32 books.
