Department of Medicine
About the Department
We continually seek to conduct cutting-edge, internationally recognized research, provide exceptional and compassionate patient care and offer a comprehensive training program for medical students and residents in internal medicine and the subspecialties. Patient care services have expanded and our many satellite and affiliated locations continue to evolve. Partnering with Keck Medical Center, we experienced further growth in our operations with Orange Coast Oncology Hematology in Orange County. This practice, led by Louis VanderMolen, continues to grow at its three clinical sites – in Newport Beach and Irvine; and at Hoag Hospital.
In addition to our continued expansion into Orange County, we have successfully recruited clinicians in the strategic areas of cancer, gastroenterology, cardiovascular medicine and organ transplant. Implementation of a Primary Care Initiative began with the recruitment of six primary care internists during the first phase of development as we expand in Beverly Hills, Downtown Los Angeles, La Cañada, and the University Park Campus.
The Department of Medicine is tireless in its efforts to deliver the highest quality care to the population of Southern California.

The Department of Medicine is dedicated to providing quality, state-of-the-art patient care to both insured and uninsured patient populations. The department leads USC in the provision of clinical care in both the public and private venues of the Health Sciences Campus, covering a range of specialties including primary care, acute and specialty care and oncologic treatment.
Department of Medicine faculty contribute extensively to medical student education in both the basic science and clinical clerkship years and directly supervise the training of nearly 270 house officers and fellows each year. The department reviews, revises and delivers curricula for medical students at the Keck School of Medicine and internal medicine trainees each year providing each group with a comprehensive and rich educational environment.
More than 90 Department of Medicine (DOM) faculty are currently engaged in basic and/or clinical (translational) research activities, 48 of them as Principal Investigators. These medical research programs are supported by expenditures now exceeding $53 million annually, of which 83% are federally (primarily NIH) sponsored.
