Department of Preventive Medicine

About the Department

Since its founding in 1977, the Department of Preventive Medicine has evolved continuously; it now has over 100 faculty members carrying out a wide range of research and offering educational programs that include two undergraduate majors, a MPH program, various other Master’s degrees and five PhD programs. The department’s outstanding faculty maintain an enormous base of cutting-edge, transdisciplinary and population-oriented research, which is consistently ranked at the top in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding among comparable medical school departments.

The department’s research focus is broad and encompassing, reflecting the scope of population health and preventive medicine, from local to national and even global scales. While its activities and educational mission intersect with interests of faculty in other departments and schools within the University, the department is special for its transdisciplinarity and broad reach into the School of Medicine and the University.

The educational programs have evolved over time to now encompass undergraduate majors in Health Promotion and Global Health, a professional Master of Public Health program, Masters programs in Biostatistics and Epidemiology, and Ph.D. programs in Health Behavior Research, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Environmental Health.
