care for approximately 30,000 patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures annually.<\/p>\n<p>Highly trained anesthesiologists are available in all surgical specialty disciplines including cardiac, thoracic-foregut, neurosurgery, organ transplantation, ear nose and throat, vascular, bariatric, colorectal, urology, gynecology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and sports Care involves multidisciplinary management of complex patients including transplant, cardiac, and complex urological surgical patients.<\/p>\n<p>The ICU, run by USC anesthesia intensivists, has a mixed population of patients following major urologic, ENT, GYN, or oncologic surgery. There are multiple types of major surgery in elderly patients or those with multiple co-morbidities. These patients also are frequently admitted to the SICU. Controlled hypotensive anesthetic techniques are utilized for the more extensive cancer surgeries. Advanced technology is utilized not only to provide for patient\u2019s physical improvement, but also to strengthen a patient\u2019s emotional ability to cope with the sometimes debilitating effects of pain with a goal of returning to a fully productive life. The service is extremely active, performing approximately 950 nerve block procedures per year. The use of regional anesthetic techniques alone or in combination with general anesthesia has led to faster recovery times and shorter length of stay. The department is a pioneer in managing transfusion-free and living-related Jehovah\u2019s Witness liver transplants.
