My Search for a Welcoming Space: How LGBTQ+ cancer patients seek out and find the best possible care

October 23, 2025 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
This Patient Perspective Series presentation is a program of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and Keck Medicine of USC.
As newly diagnosed cancer patients, we need to make a host of complex decisions about where to find treatment and who will treat us. This can be a stressful time for patients and their loved ones, but what if it’s further complicated by feelings of uncertainty about whether we, as individuals, are accepted and welcome in the healthcare setting?
In this conversation, three members of the LGBTQ+ community will share their personal insights into the challenges LGBTQ+ patients face when entrusting their health to others. Lindsey Morrison, Health Equity Program Manager at Keck Medicine of USC, and Dr. Aaron Rothbart, Assistant Professor of Speech Pathology at the Keck School of Medicine—both cancer patients—will be joined by social worker and Clinical Operations Support Manager at the Ralph Lauren Center, Mario Espitia, to discuss barriers to optimal care and strategies to achieve it.
