Medical students meet monthly with 4th and 5th graders at Eastman Elementary School in East Los Angeles, planting seeds of interest in higher education and encouraging them to strive for excellence. The medical students present informative sessions about health matters that directly affect the communities where the participants live. The program culminates with \u201cGraduation Day at Keck\u201d for the elementary students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>LA\u2019s Biostatistics Education Summer Training\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LABEST program at USC is a six-week Los Angeles summer program in USC\u2019s Department of Population and Public Health Sciences that trains underrepresented students to explore health issues using quantitative methods. The program provides public health training from expert biostatisticians, epidemiologists and data scientists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pphs.usc.edu\/applications-open-for-underrepresented-students-biostatistics-summer-program\/\">Learn more about LA\u2019s Biostatistics Education Summer Training<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Medical Counseling, Organizing, and Recruiting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Med-COR program seeks to increase the pool of high school students of color committed to the pursuit of careers in the health profession. The program supports students from disadvantaged backgrounds and prepares them academically to be competitive for admission to colleges and universities nationwide. Med-COR has been serving the greater Los Angeles community for over 50 years and has produced countless medical and health professionals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/keck.usc.edu\/usc-med-cor-celebrates-50-years-of-preparing-local-teens-for-college-and-health-professions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read more about Med-COR<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Safe Kids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safe Kids is a network of organizations with a mission to prevent accidental injuries and deaths in children. Los Angeles General Medical Center is the leading agency for the Los Angeles Coalition, which raises awareness of potential accidental injuries, as well as ways to prevent them. Coalition members are health care, law enforcement, and fire and safety technicians who provide their expertise in teaching families in our community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Southern California Center for Chronic Health Disparities in Latino Families and Children<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Southern California Center for Latino Health, a collaboration between the Keck School and Children\u2019s Hospital Los Angeles, aims to reverse obesity and obesity-related chronic diseases in Latinos by finding culturally sensitive solutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/keck.usc.edu\/usc-and-chla-win-24-5-million-nih-grant-to-establish-center-aimed-at-improving-latino-health-across-southern-california\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read more about the Southern California Center for Latino Health<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Tom Bradley Mini Medical School<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom Bradley Mini Medical School is an outreach program that aims to expose elementary school students to medical and scientific information in an effort to stimulate their interest in medicine and higher education. Once a month, medical student volunteers visit the Tom Bradley Environmental Science and Humanities Charter Magnet School in South Los Angeles and provide 4th and 5th graders with an active and experiential science-based learning opportunity. The program culminates with \u201cGraduation Day at Keck\u201d for the elementary students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USC Norris cancer center highlights high-impact career paths for young students as part of a push toward STEM education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/news.usc.edu\/144089\/explaining-cancer-to-kids-usc-norris-comprehensive-cancer-center\/\">Read more about USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>USC PA Pathways Program<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The USC PA Pathways Program is focused on encouraging local youth and their families to seek higher education and careers in health care. Students from the Primary Care PA Program volunteer their time to lead educational sessions, organize expert panels and conduct workshops that highlight the diversity of careers in the medical field.
