Health at USC envisions a future in which Alzheimer&#8217;s disease can be prevented before onset. We focus on a particular population <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disproportionately affected by dementia, individuals who carry a variant of the Apolipoprotein E (<em>APOE<\/em>) gene known as <em>APOE <\/em>\u03b54<em>,<\/em> which is the most significant non-modifiable risk factor for AD.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Over half of all people with Alzheimer\u2019s disease carry this variant.<em> APOE <\/em>\u03b54 triples risk for Alzheimer\u2019s among the one in four people who carry a single copy of it. Having two copies of <em>APOE <\/em>\u03b54\u00a0\u2014 which happens in 2 to 3% of the population \u2014 multiplies Alzheimer\u2019s risk by as much as 12. We aim to change that by p<\/span>ursuing comprehensive disease impact, understanding the role of <em>APOE <\/em>\u03b54 in Alzheimer\u2019s Disease progression, and translating scientific discovery to personalized intervention for patients with elevated Alzheimer\u2019s risk.<\/p>\n<p>The Center holds a special niche within USC\u2019s rich ecosystem of Alzheimer\u2019s research given our multidisciplinary team and focus on translational impact.
