brains of people who carry the <em>APOE <\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u03b54 <\/span>gene variant \u2014 which multiplies risk for Alzheimer\u2019s disease \u2014 is a promising way to address dementia. It may open the chance to not only gain a better understanding of Alzheimer\u2019s disease but also provide customized prevention or treatment for <em>APOE <\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u03b54 <\/span>carriers.<\/p>\n<p>The Center for Personalized Brain Health unifies researchers in the Keck School of Medicine of USC\u2019s neurology and radiology departments to develop new imaging techniques. Our latest innovation is based on the PET scan\u2019s ability to reveal metabolic activity of cells.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\">Visualizing the <em>APOE <\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u03b54 <\/span>Brain<\/h2>\n<p>Research dating back to 2015 found that even before midlife \u2014 and far before the damage caused by Alzheimer\u2019s typically sets in \u2014 the brains of <em>APOE <\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u03b54 <\/span>carriers have increased uptake of omega-3 fatty acids compared to those without the variant. This difference suggests that the <em>APOE <\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u03b54 <\/span>brain may be starved for omega-3s, which are understood to inhibit processes that lead to Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>To probe this variation, researchers at the USC Center for Personalized Brain Health created a PET imaging method to trace a specific omega-3 fatty acid called DHA.
