The PhD program is the pathway to becoming an outstanding scientist who contributes in the development of knowledge to advance the field.

Apply to the PhD Program

Applicants who have completed or are in the process of completing a four-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university may be eligible to apply for admissions to the Keck School of Medicine. Doctoral applicants should also have demonstrated research ability and experience.

Applicants must meet minimum requirements for admission to the University (overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0). However, an undergraduate GPA of 3.5 and a combined GRE Verbal+Quantitative score of at least 312 are preferred. Proficiency in the English language is essential.

How to Apply

  1. Statement of Purpose – A brief and focused essay about your career and research goals, and how you intend to achieve these goals. It should also describe your accomplishments thus far along your projected career path.
  2. Transcripts – Upload scanned copies of official transcripts (university-issued) from all institutions attended.
  3. Letters of Recommendation – Three (3) letters from faculty members with direct knowledge of your research abilities. No hard copies will be accepted.
  4. Curriculum Vitae
  • Scores must be submitted directly from ETS
  • ETS code: 4852 (no department code is needed)
  • Subject test is not required.
  1. A Photocopy of the first two pages of your passport.
    A report of your scores on the TOEFL or IELTS sent by ETS to USC. Please review USC’s English Proficiency Criteria.
  3. Required official copies of materials from non-U.S. schools vary from country to country. Please see Admission Requirement by Country.
  4. GPA Notation on Application
    When listing undergraduate/graduate GPAs (grade point averages) on the application, please use the system of your university. If you received a percentage grade, provide the average percentage. If you were graded on a scale other than 4.0 (with 4.0 equal to an „A”), please indicate the average grade AND indicate the scale (for example, 8.5/10).

Mail official transcripts from all college/university institutions attended. For faster processing, include your 10-digit USC ID with your transcripts.
