Diversity and Inclusion

The Keck School of Medicine of USC is committed to creating a culture that promotes and celebrates diversity and inclusion at all levels of the institution. This commitment also extends into our Emergency Medicine Clerkships.

Here at the Los Angeles County + University of Southern California Medical Center (LAC+USC), we serve a diverse patient population that has traditionally not had adequate access to primary or emergent care. Our emergency medicine residency program strives to recruit residents who mirror our patient populations and are both dedicated to our patients and to the care of the underserved.

To work toward this goal, we have integrated a variety of programs into our clerkship. We encourage all of our rotation applicants to apply for the Diversity in Medicine Clerkship Award (see below). We additionally reserve spots in our highly competitive rotation for students who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM). All applicants to this award will be automatically considered for these URiM slots in our rotation.

Diversity in Medicine Clerkship Award

The Office of the Dean and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the Keck School are excited to introduce the Diversity in Medicine Visiting Clerkship Award, which provides support for fourth-year URiM medical students to participate in visiting student clerkships at our institution. The goal of this program is to increase awareness of opportunities in academic medicine for student groups traditionally underrepresented in medicine.

Diversity and Inclusion in Resident Recruitment

Our residency strives to recruit a diverse group of residents each year. Toward this end, we have several initiatives — including efforts led by the clerkship directors — focused on the recruitment of URiM applicants.

We have a screening process that focuses on identifying talented future physicians that will best serve the needs of our patients. We accomplish this through targeted events and mentorship opportunities for URiM applicants.

Resident Opportunities in Diversity and Inclusion

In conjunction with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion we offer opportunities for residents to participate in a variety of mentorship and advocacy activities. Residents can participate in pipeline programs as role models, mentors and speakers for students ranging from elementary school to medical students. Residents also have the opportunity to work with a variety of organizations focused on diversity and inclusion on a local and national level. Opportunities to participate in a variety of ongoing research projects related to diversity and inclusion are also available to interested residents.
