SUMMARY:Come Read with Me at USC
DESCRIPTION:The Summer Literacy Intervention Program “Come Read With Me at USC” offered through the USC Caruso Family Center for Childhood Communication will focus on the development of early literacy skills for children with severe to profound hearing loss\, ages 5;0 to 10;0\, whose primary language spoken at home is Spanish and the school instructional language is English. Effective literacy intervention strategies will be taught to teachers\, who will\, in turn\, instruct the children and in sessions with their primary caregiver. Children will move from dependence on adult support to independence during the period of early literacy development over the three-week summer program. Come Read with Me at USC is designed to meet the needs of the community at three levels: the child\, the family system\, and the educational system. Teachers receive literacy training and apply these skills by providing literacy instruction during the program while also strengthening practices they can take back to their own community classrooms\, Deaf/Hard of Hearing children are immersed in small-group intensive literacy instruction to improve literacy outcomes\, and parents are empowered with strategies to implement and reinforce literacy instruction at home. For more information and to see how to qualify for this summer program\, please reach out to Chelsea Sowden (chelsea.sowden@med.usc.edu) or Lori Wagner (lorivelji.wagner@usc.edu).
