Dr. Hofman's field of expertise is angiogenesis and the blood-brain-barrier in human primary brain tumors and metastatic breast cancer to the brain. Her approach is to functionally characterize the tumor-associated brain endothelial cells because these cells are the target for anti-vascular therapy in cancer. Her laboratory uses both in vitro and in vivo systems to determine the mechanism(s) of chemoresistance. Once it is understood why these cells are resistant to standard of care drugs, they will identify agents which specifically disrupt the tumor vasculature, resulting in eliminating tumor growth.
