Overview

Dr. Monroe studies the role of nutrients, genetics and gene/environment interactions in the causation of breast, prostate, endometrial, and colorectal cancer in multiethnic populations.

In 1989, Dr. Monroe helped establish the Multiethnic Cohort Study (MEC) with Drs. Henderson, Kolonel, and Hankin. Over the past 21 years, she has been involved with all aspects of this project, including developing study questionnaires, collaborating with SEER cancer registries to update incident cancer cases, validating study questionnaires, initiating the linkage of the MEC with the California Hospital Discharge database, establishing the biospecimen collection from nearly 40,000 participants, and supervising the biological specimen storage and DNA tracking database files in Los Angeles. Dr. Monroe assists in the design of genetic epidemiologic studies of breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer and participates in analyses. She is currently a Co-Investigator with the CBCRP Special Research Initiative, California Breast Cancer Survivorship Consortium (CBCSC) representing MEC’s participation. This study will link detailed individual-level behavioral risk factor data with socioeconomic and built environment data from several California breast cancer studies. These data will be used to investigate the extent that racial/ethnic disparities in breast cancer survival can be explained by unequal access to basic health and societal resources.
