The study was picked up globally by over 90 media outlets including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/13\/health\/morning-sickness-hyperemesis-gravidarum.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/15\/health\/cause-of-morning-sickness-wellness\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/health\/healthcare\/morning-sickness-pregnancy-baby-hormone-4c709c85#comments_sector\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>11\/2023<\/strong> &#8211; Dr. Nick Mancuso and Dr. Charleston Chiang published a method that can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0002929723003257\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimate heritability explained by local ancestry and evaluate stratification bias in admixture mapping studies<\/a> in American Journal of Human Genetics. The study is led by a PhD student in CGE, Tsz Fung Chan.<\/li>\n<li><strong>11\/2023<\/strong> &#8211; Dr. Marlena Fejzo was named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercepharma.com\/special-reports\/2023s-fiercest-women-life-sciences\">2023\u2019s Fiercest Women in Life Sciences<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>11\/2023<\/strong> &#8211; Dr. Charleston Chiang received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashg.org\/membership\/awards\/2023-awardees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Human Genetics and Genomics Advances award<\/a> for outstanding research at the 2023 American Society of Human Genetics annual meeting, for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/hgg-advances\/fulltext\/S2666-2477(22)00076-8\">publication<\/a> led by Grace Sheng that investigated regions inverted between different genome builds in humans.<\/li>\n<li><strong>9\/2023<\/strong> &#8211; Dr. Charleston Chiang, in collaboration with Drs. Wiemels and de Smith published a study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2666247723000714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">evaluating the accuracy of current polygenic risk scores for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia in Latino children<\/a> in Human Genetics and Genomics Advances. The study was led by former PhD student in CGE, Soyoung Jeon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>7-8\/2023<\/strong> &#8211; Dr. Fejzo joined the Center for Genetic Epidemiology as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Population and Public Health Sciences, and her genetic work is profiled in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/lifestyle\/parenting\/arid-41190715.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Irish Examiner<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insideprecisionmedicine.com\/news-and-features\/can-precision-pregnancy-save-more-mothers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inside Precision Medicine<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>6\/2023<\/strong> &#8211; Dr. Fejzo, Dr. Mancuso, Dr. Cortessis, and colleagues publish their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biorxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2023.06.02.542661v1\">preprint<\/a> elucidating the molecular mechanism of genetic variants in GDF15 in nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (currently under review in <em>Nature<\/em>), picked up by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2377397-we-finally-know-what-causes-morning-sickness-during-pregnancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Scientist<\/a> and additional news outlets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>6\/2023<\/strong> &#8211; Dr. Charleston Chiang, has been appointed as the Associate Director of the Center for Genetic Epidemiology.<\/li>\n<li><strong>6\/2023<\/strong> &#8211; Drs. Haiman and Conti, together with former postdoc Dr. Darst (now at FHCRC) published a report in <em>AJHG<\/em> evaluating <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37311464\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approaches for constructing polygenic risk scores <\/a>for prostate cancer in men of African and European ancestry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>5\/2023<\/strong> &#8211; The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mancusolab.com\/\">Mancuso Lab<\/a> published <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37099718\/\">a simulator for transcriptome wide association studies<\/a> in Bioinformatics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>4\/2023<\/strong> &#8211; Members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gazal-lab.org\/\">Gazal Lab<\/a> were part of eleven papers being released in a special issue of Science, including a paper on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.abn2937\">leveraging mammalian constraint to understand human diseases<\/a>.
