Donations to the Althea and Fredric Alexander Student Support Fund
Continuing their legacy to promote and sponsor underserved minority medical education at the Keck School of Medicine of USC
About Althea and Fredric Alexander
As the Dean of Diversity and Inclusion at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, Althea worked tirelessly to recruit minority students to the medical profession. She provided financial assistance, professional guidance, as well as emotional and academic support. In addition, she offered students a sense of community, helped develop their interests in service, and set the stage for life-long friendships.
Fredric benefited from Althea’s efforts, and after a career in geology, he completed his medical degree at USC and went on to become the first African American medical director of a major Kaiser medical center. He complemented her passionate work by serving as a role model and mentor to countless aspiring professionals.
By working with students of all ages, the Alexanders built a strong and lasting pipeline for students of color into the field of medicine. Over the past 40+ years, USC has graduated over 700 minority medical students, in large part due to the Althea and Fredric’s relentless advocacy.
About the Fund
The Keck School wishes to carry on Althea and Fredric’s legacy in minority medical education. In that spirit, we have created the Althea and Fredric Alexander Student Support Fund. The purpose of the fund is to increase recruitment and retention of underserved minority medical students by providing personal, professional and financial aid.
The fund will go beyond tuition to sponsor:
- Extracurricular service, research, educational and professional projects
- Travel expenses for conferences and clerkships
- Cultural celebrations and events
- Student-alumni mentorship programs
- Tuition assistance, once it is endowed.
A committee consisting of dedicated Keck School alumni as well as representatives of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion manages the distribution of funds to students.
Please help us carry on Althea and Fredric’s vision by contributing to this fund.
