class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Overview<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW154785712 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW154785712 BCX0\">Commercial tobacco product use is a significant public health concern among American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) populations. AIAN youth report the highest prevalence of cigarette and other commercial tobacco product use compared to other ethnic\/racial groups in the US. On average, AIAN youth initiate smoking one year earlier than the general population.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW154785712 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW154785712 BCX0\">Several evidence-based treatments for youth smoking cessation are available, but most of them have not been culturally tailored to the unique needs of AIAN youth. Certain AIAN cultural practices involve the use of ceremonial tobacco. Culturally sensitive interventions are needed to address the distinction between ceremonial tobacco use and commercial tobacco use, discuss the differences in ingredients, and teach youth about Tribe-specific stress management techniques.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW154785712 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW154785712 BCX0\">This project focused on the development, implementation, and evaluation of the adapted version of Project EX, an evidence-based intervention for teen smoking cessation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"TextRun SCXW235254254 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235254254 BCX0\">Methods:<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW235254254 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235254254 BCX0\">AIAN youth (n = 37) participated in an eight-week curriculum. Intent-to-treat analysis with biochemical validation results indicated that 27% of youth quit smoking at the three-month follow-up. Participants reported being satisfied with the program overall and enjoying the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW235254254 BCX0\">culturally adapted<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235254254 BCX0\">\u00a0activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW235254254 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235254254 BCX0\">Implementation challenges resulted in a change from a three-arm to a single-arm trial.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"TextRun SCXW235254254 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235254254 BCX0\">Results:<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW235254254 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235254254 BCX0\">Challenges and lessons learned will be shared that included participants\u2019 reluctance to randomization, staff turnover, and agencies\u2019 limited capacity to implement the intervention. Multiple lessons were learned while attempting to implement a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with an AIAN population including the contradiction of implementing a Westernized and excluding methodology (RCT) with a population that values connectedness and holistic perspectives.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW235254254 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235254254 BCX0\">Another lesson learned was the extent of resistance to biochemical validation of tobacco product use status that we experienced, and which understandably stems from this population\u2019s negative experiences with the research community.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW235254254 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235254254 BCX0\">Overall, this work details the challenges associated with implementing rigorous research methodologies in real-world settings while attempting to reduce health disparities in tobacco product use among AIAN youth.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW235254254 BCX0\"
