Policy Statement

The Keck School of Medicine recognizes narrative assessment as a critical component of student evaluation and professional development.

Policy Requirement

  1. Narrative assessment is provided in any course or clerkship with a group size of 12 students or less and instructor-student interaction of at least five sessions with a single faculty
  2. Formative narrative assessment is solely to provide feedback to students and will not be included as part of the final course or clerkship grade and not reported in the MSPE.
  3. Summative narrative assessment will be included as part of the final course and clerkship grade and reported in the MSPE.
  4. The Medical Education Curriculum Committee will monitor compliance with the completion of narrative assessments on an annual basis.
