Policy on Student Evaluation of Courses, Clerkships, and Instructors

Policy Statement:

The Keck School of Medicine recognizes that Keck School students evaluating and providing feedback on learning events of the MD program is an important feature of their educational experience and professional development as physicians. Evaluations submitted by students are confidential.

Policy Requirement:

Students are required to complete evaluations of courses, clerkships, and instructors. Students are required to complete assigned evaluations in the timeframe designated for each individual course or clerkship. The timeline will be communicated to the students in course syllabi and clerkship manuals. Students must complete 80% of assigned evaluations.

Lack of compliance with the evaluation completion policy is considered a violation of the Keck Code of Professional Behavior and students who are out of compliance may be referred to the Student Performance Committee.

Process:

Students will be provided multiple reminders throughout the time evaluation forms remain active, and students will be notified when they are non-compliant with this policy.

Evaluation completion rates will be monitored. Compliance reports for individual students will be sent to the students, the students‘ coaches, and the Associate Dean for Student Affairs to determine the appropriate course of action if policy requirements are not being met.

Reports from evaluation data will be aggregated and disseminated to the appropriate faculty, course directors, clerkship directors, discipline coordinators, and the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and Assistant Deans for Curriculum by the Department of Medical Education after a course ends and all student grades and evaluations have been submitted. The Medical Education Curriculum Committee and its subcommittees with review and act on the results of evaluations.
