Overview

Dr. Fong completed his undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Toronto, and his medical degree at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Case Western University, and fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. Fong then served as Assistant Professor of Medicine and Imaging Sciences in the Program for Heart Failure and Transplantation, and Co-Director of Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging at the University of Rochester before joining the faculty at USC as Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine in 2011.

Dr. Fong helped build and expand the offerings for advanced healthcare to cardiac patients serviced by Keck Medical Center of USC. He established the Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy Program and served as Co-Director until 2019. He is also active in the Mechanical Circulatory Support Program, caring for patients with surgically implanted ventricular assist devices, and established the Ventricular Assist Device Clinic in 2011. Dr. Fong established a dedicated Heart Failure Clinic at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center in 2015, where he currently serves as Director of Heart Failure. He is also active in the Department of Radiology doing research and interpreting cardiac MRI.

Dr. Fong has been active in several medical center committees including the Electronic Health Records Committee and Medical Records Committee. He was instrumental to Cardiology in the transition from paper-based documentation. He served as an Associate Program Director in the Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship Program from 2016 to 2018 and has been the site director for the USC Physician Assistant Program’s Internal Medicine rotation at Keck Hospital since 2013. Lastly, he currently serves as West Region Co-Chair for the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Foundation Global Steering Committee.

Dr. Fong’s research interests include heart failure, cardiac amyloidosis, cardiogenic shock, cardiac imaging, severe hypertension and mobile technology in healthcare. He has been awarded grants by Proteus Digital Health and the Coulter Foundation, and helped design and study mobile apps with Moving Analytics and Medable Inc. He is also studying the use of a novel digital scale with Bodyport, to reduce heart failure hospital readmissions.
