Overview

Shuping Zhong, Ph.D. received his master degree at Fudan University, Shanghai Medical College (Shanghai Medical University) and his Ph.D. at Hunan Medical University (Xiang-Ya Medical College), and finished his postdoctoral training at University of Minnesota. He joined USC in 2001 and became a faculty member in 2006 in Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biologyof USC. His studies focus on the molecular mechanism of alcohol-associated breast cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma, which includes signal transduction, histone modifications and regulation of RNA Pol III genes on cancers. His lab discovered for the first time that alcohol-activated JNK1 upregulates Pol III gene transcription to promoted tumor formation in alcohol-fed mice. His studies were the first to demonstrate a role of histone H3 phosophorylation in deregulation of Brf1 and Pol III genes and to establish that alcohol- increased ERα activity enhanced expression of these genes, resulting in cell transformation. His lab is currently exploring the synergistic inhibitory effects of chemicals and kinase inhibitors on alcohol-associated cancers.
