USC Neurobehavioral / Neuropsychiatry Fellowship Program

The USC Neurobehavioral / Neuropsychiatry fellowship program, accredited by the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties (UCNS), is a one year program for PGY 5-6 level trainees specializing in the care and treatment of patients with dementia and neurobehavioral disorders. Our tertiary care referral center serves a large geographical area in California, with a busy clinical practice, a multidisciplinary clinical and translational research program and teaching program for medical students, residents and fellows. Under the leadership of Program Director, John Ringman, MD, the fellow will be assigned rotations at multiple sites to ensure a robust educational experience designed to meet the ACGME Program Requirements for Residency Education.

Program Director

Dr. Ringman is Clinical Professor of Neurology at the Memory and Aging Center at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Neurobiology at U.C. Berkeley before going to medical school at McGill University, and doing his internship and residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He then came to Los Angeles to pursue subspecialty training in behavioral neurology and dementia. His current activities include performing studies of persons with or destined to develop familial Alzheimer’s disease due to known genetic mutations, clinical research in late-onset Alzheimer’s disease in association with the USC Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, and seeing patients with cognitive or behavioral problems referable to neurological and in particular, neurodegenerative disease.

Curriculum of the Fellowship

Trainees will learn to comprehensively evaluate and treat patients with behavioral and cognitive symptoms including the performance of the neurobehavioral evaluation and interpretation of neuropsychological evaluations. Emphasis is placed on dementia though we offer exposure to a wide range of neurological and psychiatric patients.

Eligibility Criteria

• The fellow must possess a current valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States or Canada or its territories.
• The fellow must be a graduate of a residency program in neurology or other specialties accredited by the ACGME or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

The fellow must be board certified or eligible for certification in a primary ABMS or RCPSC specialty
