This year’s Max R. Gaspar, MD Symposium takes a step away from the everyday. The focus is on metaphorical “Zebras, Unicorns, and Black Swans.” Talks include intriguing titles such as “Carotid Artery Disease and Cognitive Function: Knowns, Known Unknowns, and Unknown Unknowns,” by Tze-Woei Tan, MBBS, MPH, and “When Veins Attack: Nutcracker, Pelvic Congestion, May-Thurner’s Syndrome,” by William M. Lee, MD.

The day includes a special session on vascular diseases in children, kicked off by Gaspar Visiting Professor Dawn M. Coleman, MD, Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Duke University, and her lecture “Pediatric Renovascular Hypertension and Beyond: The Importance of Multidisciplinary Teams and Stakeholder Engagement.”

The course directors, Professor Sukgu Han, MD, MSc, Chief of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy and Associate Professor Kenneth Ziegler, MD, believe that this year’s focus on the unusual will be of lifelong value to participants. “These are cases that you won’t see every day, but you still need to be ready for them,” explained Dr. Han.

The Gaspar Symposium is run by vascular and endovascular surgeons, but Drs. Han and Ziegler pointed out that vascular surgery intersects with every other medical and surgical discipline, and so the curriculum will be of interest to medical professionals at every level. “You can learn a lot from textbooks and articles,” said Dr. Ziegler, “But you get the most value out of learning straight from a live lecturer—you get these pearls that might not come up anywhere else.”
