Stephanie Ly, MPH \u201911, PhD, has built a career at the intersection of public health, climate change, and global transportation systems. As Senior Manager of eMobility Strategy and Manufacturing Engagement at the World Resources Institute (WRI), she works with partners and experts across sectors to advance global electric mobility.<\/p>\n

Dr. Ly\u2019s 15 years of professional experience spans four continents and 12 countries. She has worked in areas such as freight decarbonization, international transport initiatives, and large-scale infrastructure efforts, including with the Electric School Bus Initiative, NDC Transport Initiative for Asia, and Research on Infrastructure in Developing Economies (RIDE) program.<\/p>\n

Although her early focus was on maternal and child health, Dr. Ly\u2019s long-standing commitment to global poverty alleviation led her to confront the growing impact of climate change on health and livelihoods. That realization prompted a pivot from traditional academic pathways into the private and nonprofit sectors, where she applies public health training, doctoral research skills, and systems-level thinking to complex climate and transportation challenges.<\/p>\n

In her own words:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always had a North Star, and mine has been global poverty alleviation. The more that I\u2019ve worked in the field \u2013on maternal and child health \u2013 the more I realized that climate change was going to have an outsized impact on mass starvation and many other impacts. At that time, I was deep into my PhD in public health, and realized that I couldn\u2019t exactly pivot to become a climate scientist. I fortuitously landed in an electric vehicle manufacturing company that led to my job today \u2013it’s been an amazing ride.\u201d<\/p>\n

On transitioning out of academia:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s so many transferable skill sets. It\u2019s really thinking about: what are the core critical thinking components that I’m learning in class? How do I solve problems? How do I frame a project\u2026 you may see that parallel in a nonprofit setting or a business setting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPublic health has helped me think outside the box. Rather than just focus on the immediate, obvious problem at hand \u00a0to take systems-level thinking. I would say sometimes folks aren\u2019t trained in that way of thinking and that can be a big asset no matter where you go.\u201d<\/p>\n

On how her doctoral training translated to industry impact:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cWhen I was at the manufacturer, which was in the private sector, one of my biggest assets that I brought to the company was being able to write successful grants worth millions of dollars to deploy clean technology. Grant writing is similar whether you’re writing it for clean energy projects or public health programs. Do you have a really solid abstract? A good methodology? Clear aims? Reasonable budget? And did you justify all those things?\u201d<\/p>\n

On gaining experience and networking:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cDuring my MPH at USC, I made use of internships and my practicum. The internships helped me figure out what I didn\u2019t like, which is just as valuable as knowing what you do like and what you\u2019re passionate about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother great thing to is networking \u2013 find people who have cool jobs that you may see yourself doing, or are just really curious about, and reach out to them on LinkedIn or through professors. You can approach any of your professors asking, \u2018do you know someone doing this type of work?\u2019 and then engage in a 30-minute coffee chat. They can become a great network later when you apply for jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the power of keeping in touch:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cYour classmates not only become great friends during the MPH, but they will have amazing jobs after graduation. It\u2019s been a long time since I graduated, so my cohort-mates are executives working in many different sectors. I think being an MPH alum and a USC alum can be really powerful if you leverage it.\u201d<\/p>\n

On resilience and career navigation:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cRejection is also part of the process. There are so many times that I applied for roles with no success, including at the organization I now work at. It takes resilience – don\u2019t fold after the first time. Get your best resume, practice those interview skill sets, have a goal, and stay as true to that as you can. I\u2019m really happy where I am, and consider my work, my dream job. When I was a student, I would have never imagined working on the things that I get to work on now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n\n
