The Department of Population and Public Health Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of USC has released its 2025\u20132026 Annual Report<\/a>, showcasing a year defined by scientific discovery, interdisciplinary collaboration, educational excellence and community engagement.<\/p>\n

Ranked #1 nationally in NIH funding per investigator by the 2025 Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research, the Department continues to advance research and training that address pressing public health challenges locally and globally.<\/p>\n

The report highlights major research advances in disease and genetics, maternal and child health, cancer prevention, addiction science and environmental exposures. Researchers examined how wildfire smoke and heat stress affect birth outcomes, uncovered links between PFAS exposure and chronic disease, and advanced precision prevention strategies for colorectal cancer.<\/p>\n

The report also spotlights the Department\u2019s response to the Los Angeles wildfires, which brought together researchers and community partners to study environmental exposures, mental health impacts and community recovery.<\/p>\n

This year marked important milestones across the Department. The new Division of Biostatistics and Health Data Science launched to strengthen research in AI, machine learning and precision health, while the inaugural PPHS Research Symposium brought together faculty, trainees and students to showcase collaborative public health research.<\/p>\n

Education and workforce development remained central to the Department\u2019s mission, with more than 1,000 students participating in research, practicum and community-based learning opportunities through partnerships spanning local and global organizations.<\/p>\n

The report also highlights the work of institutes and centers, including the Institute for Addiction Science and the Institute on Inequalities in Global Health, which continue advancing research, policy and education to improve health outcomes.<\/p>\n
