An anatomy expert looks beyond Hollywood’s depiction of prehistory’s most popular creatures.<\/h3>\n

Accurate or not,\u00a0the fantastical portrayals of dinosaurs in movies shape our perception of prehistory\u2019s most popular creatures. Think of the bellowing brachiosaurus in\u00a0Jurassic Park<\/em>, or\u00a0King Kong<\/em>\u2019s pterosaur flying off with a heroine in its talons.\u00a0Michael Habib, assistant professor at the\u00a0Keck School of Medicine of USC<\/a>\u00a0and research associate at the\u00a0Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County\u2019s Dinosaur Institute,<\/a>\u00a0explains the science behind our Mesozoic misconceptions.<\/p>\n

Myth No. 1
\nDinosaurs looked scaly, like reptiles.<\/h3>\n

\u201cIn most film franchises, especially Jurassic Park, they continue to make all dinosaurs scaly. The velociraptor may have been scaly on its feet, but so are birds, and if you were to point out a bird to someone, you wouldn\u2019t describe it as a scaly creature. People think the more reptilian look is what people want to see. \u2026We know they probably had bristles, feathers, colors and patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n

Myth No. 2
\nBecause of their size, dinosaurs were incredibly loud.<\/h3>\n

\u201c<\/strong>Real animals in the world don\u2019t walk around with their mouths open that often, especially when stalking prey. Dinosaurs like brachiosaurs with long necks are shown trumpeting like elephants. \u2026But actually, with the anatomy of a neck that long, the nerves would make it almost impossible to make those kinds of sounds. These 40-ton animals probably hissed when they wanted to communicate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Myth No. 3
\nWhen they came across prey, carnivorous dinosaurs were relentless hunters.<\/h3>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll probably never convince people that a T-Rex walks by a potential meal and doesn\u2019t eat it because it\u2019s full. That happens all the time in the Serengeti\u2014lions walk by their prey because they don\u2019t need to eat. \u2026The biggest myth is that dinosaurs were monsters as opposed to animals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n\n
