Led by Hong-Wei Dong,\u00a0MD, PhD, associate\u00a0professor of\u00a0neurology,\u00a0the team will join the BRAIN Initiative Cell Census Network (BICCN) consortium, a five-year multisite collaboration funded by the BRAIN Initiative.<br \/>\nLaunched in 2013 by former\u00a0President Barack Obama,\u00a0JD,\u00a0the BRAIN Initiative is a public-private partnership\u00a0led by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)\u00a0that unites federal agencies with foundations, universities and industry groups to develop and apply innovative technologies to revolutionize the study of the human brain.<br \/>\nIn the present project, researchers will examine the organ in finer detail than ever before\u00a0\u2014\u00a0combining anatomical, physiological\u00a0and genetic approaches to paint a comprehensive picture of different cell types. It\u2019s an extensive classification and mapping effort comparable in scale to the human genome project.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen scientists first began studying the brain, we divided it into lobes,\u201d Dong\u00a0said. \u201cThen we began classifying it into progressively smaller regions. Now we\u2019re looking at groups of cell types and even individual cells.\u201d<br \/>\nJoining the BRAIN Initiative, one of NIH\u2019s most prestigious programs, means that\u00a0Keck School researchers will have the chance to impact diverse research activities and serve as a catalyst to other projects across the field of biomedicine.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re creating a classification system for a finer level of detail than we\u2019ve ever tackled before,\u201d said Arthur W. Toga,\u00a0PhD, Provost Professor of Ophthalmology, Neurology, Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences, Radiology and Engineering, and\u00a0director of the\u00a0institute. \u201cIn the process, we\u2019re developing datasets and tools essential to illuminating the structure and function of the brain.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>Looking at all angles<\/strong><br \/>\nThe consortium\u2019s overarching goal is to identify and catalog each cell type in the mouse brain, which requires tackling the problem from all angles: from connectivity mapping to observing molecular signatures, electrophysiological properties, and functional relevance.<br \/>\nDong\u2019s team, already well established in the field through its revolutionary Mouse Connectome Project (MCP), will serve as the anatomy hub for the BICCN initiative. The group\u2019s primary focus is on documenting and describing the structure and connections of various brain cells.<br \/>\n\u201cWe proposed to identify these cell types based\u00a0on\u00a0how they connect with other cells across the brain,\u201d explained Houri\u00a0Hintiryan,\u00a0PhD,\u00a0assistant professor of research\u00a0neurology\u00a0and a member of Dong\u2019s working group. \u201cA cell type will be determined by all of its connectional outputs and inputs.\u201d<br \/>\nDong is the principal investigator for the neuroanatomy analysis, based at\u00a0the institute, and also provides\u00a0support for two other projects: a connectivity and transcriptome analysis based at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory\u00a0in New York\u00a0and an\u00a0epigenomics\u00a0project based at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies\u00a0in\u00a0La Jolla.<br \/>\nFor each project, Dong\u2019s team will generate and analyze data, and provide informatics support. The group will employ a combination of the most advanced imaging technologies available, including cutting-edge microscopy and viral tracing methods.<br \/>\n<strong>Mapping the mammalian brain<\/strong><br \/>\nThis fall, Dong launched the USC Center for Integrative Connectomics (CIC), which houses a cross-disciplinary group\u00a0working to develop a detailed connectivity map of the mammalian brain. Along with studying each cell\u00a0type\u2019s basic function, the CIC will explore larger cellular networks and disorders caused by connectivity issues.
