Kids who vape or JUUL or use e-cigarettes smoke about as much as teen smokers who never used the devices, according to\u00a0a USC study<\/a>\u00a0in the Nov. 5 journal Pediatrics.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe findings show that e-cigs do nothing to deter the amount of combustible smoking in youth,\u201d said\u00a0Jessica Barrington-Trimis<\/a>, an assistant professor of\u00a0preventive medicine<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0Keck School of Medicine of USC\u00a0and the study\u2019s lead author. \u201cOn the contrary, they increase the likelihood that vaping teens will start smoking.\u201d<\/p>\n

The study is likely to add heft to a growing chorus seeking changes in regulation or industry practice for the nicotine delivery devices. Their popularity has surged while government and health officials warn of unintended consequences. The e-cigarette market is expected to reach $44.6 billion worldwide in five years.<\/p>\n

Policies needed to provide deterrent to teen smoking<\/strong><\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the Food and Drug Administration commissioner\u00a0declared e-cigs and vaping an \u201cepidemic\u201d<\/a>\u00a0that threatens to undo gains in decreasing smoking rates, and ordered e-cigarette manufacturers to submit plans on reducing teen use.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis study shows that tobacco control policies are needed to reduce adolescent use of e-cigs and prevent progression to more frequent tobacco use,\u201d Barrington-Trimis said.<\/p>\n

The USC researcher and her colleagues surveyed 6,258 high schoolers from three studies \u2014 the Children\u2019s Health Study and Happiness and Health Study in Southern California and the Yale Adolescent Survey study in Connecticut \u2014 about their vaping and smoking usage.
