When US hospitals called for surgical masks, Jonathan Yu, a high school junior, sold sweatshirts he designed to raise money to buy masks for hospitals. The family\u2019s giving, however, didn\u2019t stop there. Jonathan\u2019s father, Herman Yu MA \u201993, CFO of Baidu, Inc., and mother, Susan, heard that Keck Medicine of USC needed masks. Herman enlisted his entire family to find a factory in China that had 20,000 KN95 masks available. \u201cFor the next two weeks,\u201d Herman said, \u201cour family worked feverishly, sourcing readily available masks in China, arranging for the shipment of boxes from a Shanghai factory to our garage while most businesses were shut down, and finding an exporter to help with customs clearing.\u201d The family was jubilated when the masks finally arrived at Keck Medicine of USC, overcoming flight cancellation and other challenges. \u201cWe are honored to provide a lending hand to the SC family while KN95 masks were in short supply,\u201d Herman said. \u201cUSC has been instrumental to my career, and I hope this experience becomes a valuable learning for our son Jonathan, as we bonded to give back to the USC community even after 27 years.
