Coronavirus vaccines are coming, offering hope for a world rocked by pandemic, but USC experts say how soon they\u2019ll become available \u2014 and in what form \u2014 is not yet clear.<\/p>\n

Big pharma and government labs around the world are spending billions of dollars on research. Merck & Co. is in the hunt, and the CEO of Pfizer Inc. said in a\u00a0recent Forbes article<\/a>\u00a0that he aims to have a vaccine ready by Jan. 1.<\/p>\n

Though vaccines usually take longer than a year to develop, it is possible to deliver one even sooner, according to\u00a0Pin Wang<\/a>, professor of materials sciences and biomedical and chemical engineering at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy the end of the year, it should be clear if this is doable. I am optimistic because the data is looking promising,\u201d said Wang, whose work in molecular engineering is focused on understanding immune system responses and developing new treatments, including vaccines, for diseases.<\/p>\n

Coronavirus vaccines could come in waves<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oxford University has emerged as a frontrunner, advancing a\u00a0potential vaccine<\/a>\u00a0that\u2019s shown positive early results and is advancing to clinical trials that involve thousands of people. The Massachusetts-based biotech company Moderna also is working on a vaccine that is expected to\u00a0move to large-scale clinical trials<\/a>\u00a0next month. More than 100 potential vaccines for COVID-19 are in development around the world.<\/p>\n
