Laura Mosqueda knows that many of her older patients can\u2019t make the trek to mass vaccination sites. That\u2019s why she\u2019s administering at-home COVID-19 vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n

Laura Mosqueda, MD, is as amazed as anyone at how far COVID-19 vaccination efforts have come in the last few months. However, as she sees mass vaccination clinics<\/a>\u00a0administer thousands of doses per day, she also knows that these sites still aren\u2019t accessible to everyone \u2014 especially many older people.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why Mosqueda, the former dean of the Keck School of Medicine and a family medicine and geriatrics physician at Keck Medicine of USC<\/a>, chose to bring vaccines to them as both vaccinator and courier.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been doing house calls for years \u2026 which makes us acutely aware of older adults who really can\u2019t get out,\u201d she said. \u201cWe know there are people out there who are unable to get the vaccine for a variety of reasons, and it was just the right thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

As much as she admires the efforts at the mass vaccination sites like Dodger Stadium, Mosqueda \u2014 who is also a professor of family medicine at the\u00a0Keck School of Medicine of USC<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 knows that it\u2019s not an option for some of her patients with physical disabilities, like debilitating back issues, or diseases like Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people might say, \u2018Well, gosh, if they\u2019re just homebound anyway, why do they need to be vaccinated?\u2019\u201d Mosqueda said. \u201cThe answer is because they have caregivers or other people helping them and, heck, they still want to see their grandkids.\u201d<\/p>\n

Home vaccinations are now a reality thanks to Johnson & Johnson\u2019s COVID vaccine<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mosqueda said the arrival of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine \u2014 which only requires one dose \u2014 set the home vaccination effort in motion. Keck Medicine gave 50 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to Mosqueda\u2019s team, the first 15 of which were administered Friday through Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been such a burden on people\u2019s minds,\u201d Mosqueda said. \u201cWhen they got the call saying we would do this at home, both the patients and their families were so surprised and appreciative to get it done.\u201d<\/p>\n

The recipients were spread around Los Angeles, from the area surrounding the USC Health Sciences Campus to Rowland Heights, South L.A., La Ca\u00f1ada Flintridge, Glendale and Pasadena, where Mosqueda and other volunteers partnered with the local senior center.<\/p>\n

Though the schedule for the remaining 35 doses hasn\u2019t been announced yet, there appears to be increased interest in volunteering, which Mosqueda is\u00a0happy to see.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis shows what can be done when a group of people is committed to a goal that\u2019s truly a social good,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is a way for all of us to contribute to social justice and the health and well-being of our patients and our community, and because that\u2019s such a shared value or belief among those of us who work here at Keck, we were able to do it as a team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n\n <\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
