Join us for a free, public symposium about firearm violence prevention April 25.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Organized by Master of Public Health students, this event will promote a constructive conversation around firearm violence prevention, including a keynote speech by Dr. Garen Wintemute, a UC Davis emergency physician and directer of the UC Davis Firearm Violence Research Center, and a response panel with Ricky Bluthenthal, Associate Dean for Social Justice at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.<\/p>\n

The two-hour seminar will feature voices and perspectives medical providers, violence prevention researchers, community activists, community members, responsible gun owners, people affected by gun violence, law enforcement and more. Participants will hear talks and engage in practical skills workshops about the overall impact of firearm violence and how individuals and communities can work towards mitigating the risk of firearm-inflicted injury and mortality.<\/p>\n

\nUC-Davis What You Can Do Initiative<\/i><\/b>
\nWhat You Can Do is a prevention initiative hosted at UC-Davis mobilizing health care providers to engage in clinical strategies for reducing firearm injury and death. Although a majority of providers feel it is within their responsibilities to identify risk for firearm injury and death and to talk with at-risk patients about firearm safety, few do so in practice.

\nThe American Foundation for Firearm Injury Reduction in Medicine (AFFIRM) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation comprised of healthcare professionals and researchers working together to find lasting solutions to curb the epidemic of firearm violence across the United States. Their funding goes directly to research that will inform protocols for everyone working on the frontlines of healthcare, develop innovative solutions that connect our network to other first responders and stakeholders, and create education and information for healthcare professionals and the public.

\nBe SMART for Kids<\/i><\/b><\/i>
\nBe SMART is a national gun safety campaign started by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America advocating for responsible gun ownership and reducing child gun deaths. Moms Demand Action volunteers encourage parents and caretakers \u2014 gun owners and non gun owners alike \u2014 to \u201cBe SMART\u201d and take five simple steps to help prevent shootings by children: S<\/u><\/i>ecure all guns in homes and vehicles, M<\/u><\/i>odel responsible behavior, A<\/u><\/i>sk about unsecured guns in other homes, R<\/u><\/i>ecognize the role of guns in suicide, T<\/u><\/i>ell peers to Be SMART.

\nAnna Stump<\/b>
\nJoining us for the symposium is Anna Stump, an artist and arts educator living in San Diego. She was a Senior Fulbright Scholar to the Fine Arts Department at Anadolu University in Eskisehir, Turkey in 2006-2007. She teaches studio and art history courses at San Diego City College and Grossmont College. Anna is the founder of the San Diego Feminist Image Group, and one half of the painting collaboration Hill&Stump. In her own words: \u201cMy work as a painter, performance artist, and curator is intimately connected. Interest in body politics, feminism, and physicality is grounded in community building and education, which I challenge personally by cultural risk-taking. My job is to both please and provoke.\u201d

\nTed Meyer-Scarred for Life Project<\/b>
\nFor over 16 years, Ted Meyer has been visually telling the stories of other people who have been through major medical traumas, creating a graphic yet beautiful depiction of people\u2019s suddenly altered bodies and the resulting scars in an ever-enlarging collection of artworks entitled, \u201cScarred for Life\u201d. \u201cScarred for Life\u201d continues to grow and now consists of almost 100 artistically enhanced monoprints taken directly from the scarred skin of his subjects. Each image \u2013 accompanied by a photographic portrait taken by Ted and a written story by his subject – tells a unique and intriguing story of medical crisis, resilience and healing.
