A\u00a0July 15 story in the Voice of San Diego<\/a>\u00a0on the factors driving black homelessness quoted\u00a0Ricky Bluthenthal<\/a>, PhD, professor of preventive medicine and Associate Dean for\u00a0Social Justice.<\/a><\/p>\n

The story noted:<\/p>\n

A\u00a0recent analysis of Census survey data<\/a>\u00a0by left-leaning Center on Policy Initiatives noted that the city\u2019s poverty rate among Blacks in the city was 22 percent \u2013 compared with just under 13 percent citywide.<\/em><\/p>\n

Black residents are also more likely to encounter police\u00a0police enforcement<\/a>\u00a0and though prison rates have fallen, they\u00a0remain far more likely<\/a>\u00a0than Latino or white Americans to be imprisoned \u2013 and to\u00a0face challenges in the rental market<\/a>\u00a0even if they don\u2019t have criminal histories.<\/em><\/p>\n

All of those factors can make it more difficult to access and maintain stable housing and thus make homelessness more likely.<\/em><\/p>\n

For those reasons, the Black community\u2019s disproportionate representation in the homeless population isn\u2019t an accident, said Ricky N. Bluthenthal, associate dean for social justice at USC\u2019s Keck School of Medicine who is among a group of university researchers exploring racial equity issues in the homeless population.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve basically created a country that systematically disadvantages Black folks, and you have worsened outcomes in that population as a consequence,\u201d Bluthenthal said.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
