in potentially serious health risks, according to new research from USC and UCLA.<\/p>\n<p style=\"border: 0px; font-family: 'Adobe Caslon Pro', Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 1.125rem; margin-top: and Latinx people live near flaring. Some 535,000 people live within 3 miles of flaring sites in these regions. Air quality monitoring studies have indicated that flares \u2014 which often operate continuously for days or weeks \u2014 release a variety of hazardous air pollutants, including volatile organic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and black carbon.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"border: 0px; font-family: National, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.5rem; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-left: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; line-height: 1; color: #000000;\">Health risks of flaring could affect residents of 714 counties, 28 states<\/h2>\n<p style=\"border: 0px; font-family: 'Adobe Caslon Pro', Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 1.125rem; margin-top: 16px; margin-bottom: 16px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #000000; line-height: 1.4;\">Along with links to preterm births and other adverse birth outcomes, these pollutants contribute to the development and exacerbation of asthma and effects on the respiratory, cardiovascular and nervous systems, as well as cardiopulmonary problems and cardiovascular mortality. These regions have high levels of poverty and large populations of people of color, including Native Americans in North Dakota and Montana \u2014 particularly members of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation living on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation \u2014 and Black and and Hispanic people in Texas and New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p style=\"border: 0px; font-family: 'Adobe Caslon Pro', Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 1.125rem; margin-top: 16px; margin-bottom: 16px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #000000; line-height: 1.4;\">Researchers used data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration to define the boundaries of all oil and gas shale production areas in the contiguous United States. Then, the researchers narrowed the study and refined estimates for those with the most flaring \u2014 the Permian in Texas-New Mexico, Western Gulf Williston in Montana-North Dakota and Williston in Montana-North Dakota.<\/p>\n<p style=\"border: 0px; font-family: 'Adobe Caslon Pro', Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 1.125rem; margin-top: 16px; margin-bottom: 16px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #000000; line-height: 1.4;\">The researchers focused on well data from horizontal- and directional-drilled wells that were actively producing from March 2012 through February 2020.
